Why I Love Moving Mantra Meditations

There's a practice, within the tradition of Kundalini Yoga, that you don't see in class often. But it's so enjoyable, so easy, and so beneficial that you might want to explore it. It's called celestial communication or moving, mantra meditation.

While some of the very worthwhile stuff we do in Kundalini Yoga can feel like "eating your vegetables," a moving, mantra meditation is dessert. Such a joyful, expressive way to spend 11 minutes or so!  I'm a big, big fan!  You sing a beautiful mantra as you move your arms in a repeating pattern and you are free! Free from the intrusion of negative thinking; free from worries; free from fear -- at least that's my experience. The idea is that not only are you threading the mantra through your consciousness but you're also beginning to embody the ancient sounds.

Yogi Bhajan said that celestial communication is a "methodology which will give everyone a tremendous amount of relief in their inner being."

The photo above is from a video of boys in Amritsar doing a celestial communication to the mantra Gobinday Mukanday. It's a sharp, powerful, penetrating version of this technique. Just watch the video of these boys. I love the boy who's in the foreground of the photo because he's so "in it." Witnessing his commitment to uplifting himself makes me smile. Give yourself a treat; it's just over a minute. You can also watch a more lyrical celestial communication to Guru Ram Das in the first four minutes of this video of the closing ceremony at Sat Nam Fest
